Right speed: the red in the upper halfBreak from the right. White hits the red with a 1/2 ball fraction, a high hit and left spin, at medium speed (3). White comes out of the top left corner (left long and top short cushion), comes back off the right long cushion and arrives slowly at the yellow. The red takes the top short, right long, bottom short and left long cushions and stops in the upper left area. The point is made; even if it had not been, the red would have stayed in the upper half and the yellow on the bottom spot. The green area is the target for the red; the red circle is the zone the red must not come back to.
Mistake: a hard breakWhite hits the red with a 5/8 ball fraction, a high hit and left spin, very hard (5). White again finds the yellow along the same path, but the red goes the length of the table twice and comes down right next to the yellow. Had the cue ball missed the yellow by a hair, three balls would have been left together in front of the opponent. The red circle shows the easy zone left to the opponent.
If the break missesIf the same break is played without spin (1/2 ball fraction, high hit, speed 3), white comes back narrow off the right long cushion, misses the yellow by a hair and stops next to it. No point, but thanks to the right speed the red stayed in the upper part of the left long cushion, far from the yellow. The opponent's ball is next to your ball, while the red is about four diamonds away: the opponent has to play a long, difficult path. The green area is the target for the red.
Break from the leftIf the breaking ball is to the left of the yellow, everything is mirrored: white hits the red with a 1/2 ball fraction, a high hit and right spin, at medium speed (3); it comes out of the top right corner (right long and top short cushion), comes back off the left long cushion and finds the yellow. The red stops in the upper right area. Which side you break from depends on the rule set and your preference; the defensive logic does not change.
