Start 35 (3½ diamonds), arrival 20. Aim 15 = 1st diamond of the 1st cushion.
This is a system used for narrow-angle long–short–long paths where the cue ball is near the corner of the 2nd cushion (short cushion). The cue ball aims at the part of the opposite long cushion near the corner, passes the short cushion and comes back to the long cushion on which the start is read (3rd cushion). The calculation is a single subtraction, as in the diamond system: Aim = Start − Arrival; where the aim falls on the 1st cushion, however, is found with a compressed scale. The difference from the diamond system: in the diamond system the need for corrections grows when the start drops to 35 and below; the Joy system is made exactly for this zone. The start is read only on the part of the 3rd cushion near the corner (between ½ and 3½ diamonds), rising by 2.5 per half diamond (20 … 35); the diamond system gives 12.5 … 27.5 in the same zone. On the 1st cushion (aim) one diamond is 15, not 10 (or the aim value is converted to diamonds by multiplying by 0.7), so the aim scale is compressed. The arrival scale and the spin are the same as in the diamond system (10 per diamond; maximum running spin, middle height).
When? When the cue ball is near the corner formed by the 2nd and 3rd cushions, and ball 2 and ball 3 are below 35 on the 3rd cushion (at most 3½ diamonds from the corner) or around the opposite corner on the 4th cushion: bricole shots, and around-the-side and around-the-back shots. When the start is below 20 (less than ½ diamond from the corner), the system is not defined.

Watch outThe aim line must go up the 1st cushion (towards the corner); if the aim point falls below the level of the start, the ball does not reach the 2nd cushion and the position is not played with this system.
Watch outThe spin is maximum running spin; too little spin or a high hit cannot open the narrow angle and the ball stays short.
